The Blessing of Our Lady’s Statue and the Meaning of Our Parish Grotto at
St. Charles Lwanga Catholic Parish – Muyeye, Malindi Diocese
A Place for Mary Among Us
With joy and gratitude, our parish family at St. Charles Lwanga, Muyeye, has witnessed the construction of the long-awaited statue of Our Lady at our parish grotto. The work, carried out by Ugandan artist Mr. Patrick Loi and his team, is a visible sign of our growing devotion to the Mother of God. Once completed and blessed, the statue will be a source of inspiration for our community, animating our faith, deepening our devotion to Our Lady Mary, and strengthening our spirit of prayer.
Fr Damas Missanga, S.J, the assistant parish priest who conducted the service, explained what the blessing of a Marian statue means and why having a grotto of the Virgin Mary at our parish is spiritually significant for us as a community in Muyeye.
What Happens When a Statue of Mary Is Blessed?
When the Church blesses a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, she is not consecrating an object as if it possessed magical power. Rather, the blessing is a prayer of the Church that sets the image apart for a holy purpose: to remind us of Mary, to draw our hearts toward her Son, Jesus Christ, and to encourage us to imitate her faith.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “every blessing praises God and prays for his gifts” (CCC 1671). When we bless rosaries, crosses, statues, and religious artwork, we do so so that these visible signs will remind us to use them to glorify God and assist in the salvation of souls.
The Second Council of Nicaea (787 AD), reaffirmed by the Second Vatican Council, defended the legitimacy of venerating sacred images. As Pope John Paul II explained, “Images, icons and statues of Our Lady, present in houses, public places and countless churches and chapels, help the faithful to invoke her constant presence and her merciful patronage in the various circumstances of life”. The blessing of a statue is therefore an act of faith: it acknowledges that Mary is present to us as a mother and intercessor, and it asks God to bless all who will pray before this image.
The Prayer of Blessing
The Church’s ritual for blessing a statue of Mary includes a beautiful prayer that expresses the theology behind the gesture. The prayer reads: “Lord God, we acknowledge your infinite glory and the abundance of your gifts. You chose the Blessed Virgin Mary as the mother and companion of your Son, the image and model of the church, the Mother and advocate of us all. … Father, we beseech you to bless this statue of Mary and her child Jesus, that your children have provided. May we know her protection, and trace in our hearts, the pattern of her holiness. Bless us with faith and hope, love and humility; bless us with strength in hardship and self-respect in poverty; bless us with patience in adversity and kindheartedness in times of plenty. May we search for peace, strive for justice and realize your love, as we pursue our journey through life toward your heavenly city where the Blessed Virgin Mary intercedes as Mother and reigns as Queen.”
This prayer captures what the blessing of the statue means for us: it is not the statue itself that saves, but the God who chose Mary, and who invites us through her to follow Christ more faithfully.
Why a Grotto of the Virgin Mary at Our Parish?
A Marian grotto is more than a decorative feature on parish grounds. It is a dedicated place of prayer, pilgrimage, and reflection centered on Mary’s intercession. Throughout the Catholic world, grottoes dedicated to Our Lady—often modeled after the grotto at Lourdes—serve as sanctuaries where the faithful can come to pray in silence, bring their intentions, and seek Mary’s motherly comfort.
A Space Set Apart for Prayer
Our parish grotto provides a physical, dedicated space where parishioners can come for quiet reflection, special devotions, and communal celebrations tied to Marian feast days throughout the liturgical year. In a busy and growing community like Muyeye, having a place set apart for prayer is a gift. It allows us to step away from the noise of daily life and, in the words of one parish reflection, “to feel her love and her comfort, especially in times of trouble”.
The grotto is also a place where we can gather as a community. In the Diocese of Malindi and across Kenya, Marian devotion is deeply rooted. The National Marian Shrine at Subukia—known as the “Village of Mary”—draws pilgrims from across the country who come to pray at the grotto of Mother Mary. Our parish grotto brings that same spirit of pilgrimage and devotion closer to home, to the heart of Muyeye.
A Place of Encounter with Mary, Who Leads Us to Christ
The purpose of every Marian grotto is ultimately to lead us closer to Jesus. Mary never points to herself; she always points to her Son. As the prayer of blessing reminds us, we ask to “trace in our hearts the pattern of her holiness” so that we, like her, may live lives of humble obedience and faithful prayer. The grotto invites us to imitate Mary’s fiat—her “yes” to God—and to entrust our own lives to the Lord’s will.
A Sign of Hope for Our Parish
Our grotto and the statue of Our Lady stand as a sign of hope for our young and vibrant parish. St. Charles Lwanga Parish was erected on 3 June 2018 as the 21st parish of the Catholic Diocese of Malindi, entrusted to the Society of Jesus. From its earliest days, the community gathered in simple structures for worship as parish life gradually took root. The construction of this grotto and statue is part of that ongoing growth. It reflects our desire to remain “a welcoming community of prayer, service, evangelization, and hope”.
How We Can Use Our Grotto
We encourage all parishioners and visitors to make the grotto a regular place of prayer. You may wish to:
· Pray the Rosary there, alone or in small groups.
· Bring your intentions to Mary, trusting in her motherly intercession.
· Pause for silent reflection before or after Mass.
· Gather for Marian feast days, such as the Annunciation, the Assumption, or the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.
· Teach children to know and love Mary as their heavenly Mother.
May Our Lady continue to intercede for us and lead us closer to her Son, Jesus Christ.
“Mary is the humble servant of the Lord. Entirely devoted to her Son and to his work, she collaborated in the redemption of the world.”
